Princeton's Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Students, ODUS, works with the Office of the Vice President for Campus Life, provides resources, opportunities and experiences for undergraduates and the larger Princeton University community to develop personal, cultural and social skills that complement and enrich their academic lives in support of the University's educational mission.
We cultivate our undergraduates' capacity for both citizenship and leadership on campus to prepare them for service and success in a global society. We encourage all students to uphold the highest standards of citizenship, integrity, respect, and inclusion of diverse backgrounds.

FOCUS Presents: Ruha Benjamin in Conversation with Chris Gilliard
Chris Gilliard is a Just Tech Fellow at the Social Science Research Council whose scholarship concentrates on digital privacy, surveillance, and the intersections of race, class, and technology. He advocates for critical and equity-focused approaches to tech in education and was recently profiled in the Washington Post. His works have been featured in The Chronicle of Higher Ed, EDUCAUSE Review, Vice, Real Life Magazine, Wired, and The Atlantic.
Ruha Benjamin specializes in the interdisciplinary study of science, medicine, and technology; race-ethnicity and gender; knowledge and power. She is the founding director of the Ida B. Wells JUST Data Lab and author of three books, Viral Justice (2022), Race After Technology (2019), and People’s Science (2013), and editor of Captivating Technology (2019). Through their conversation, listeners are encouraged to learn about the ways in which the tech industry reinforces biases, and increase their understanding of the role of social platforms and artificial intelligence in society.
The event was free and open to the public. Attendees had an opportunity to engage in conversation with professors Gilliard and Benjamin. Undergraduate attendees were provided free copies of Viral Justice, which have been purchased from Source of Knowledge, an independent Black-owned bookstore in Newark, New Jersey.

The Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Students invited 2016-18 Hillsborough Poet Laureate and spoken word artist William Davis (@endlesswill) to campus during the final days of Reading Period (May 2 and 3). William invites passerby to give him a one word prompt, which he then uses to create an original, heartfelt snippet of art and feeling on a typewriter.

Wow, what an inspirational message. I was impressed by reading her books and eagerly await each new novel. Now, I have heard her speak in person and several other times on UA-cam but this speech was fabulous! Just like her novels, it pushes us to look beyond the status quo at the world around us through a different lens and do what's right.
